Sustainable Malaysia Association’s stakeholder engagement session about Penang Hill UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Sustainable Malaysia Association (SMA) has organized an engagement session with stakeholders of the Penang Hill UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on 13 August 2022.

The session focuses on four themes under sustainable development framework: society, environment, economics, and governance.

The 24 stakeholders comprised of local residents, business operators, farmers, hikers, youths, and staffers of Penang Hill Corporation (PHC).

The participants were invited by PHC’s General Manager, Dato Cheok Lay Leng to tour the Penang Hill Gallery@Edgecliff, the latest completed landmark on Penang Hill.

The gallery has 5 core sections: Time tunnel, Biodiversity, Culture, Heritage, and Funicular Railway. During the tour, Dato Cheok shared about the challenges that PHC had to overcome in the application for the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

One of the issues raised during discussion was the proposed cable car project on Penang Hill as an environmental-friendly transport. The project will provide an alternative access for visitors and residents to Penang Hill.

Stakeholders of Penang Hill, especially the residents, welcome the cable car proposal as an additional transport service.

Another issue raised was the garbage brought by tourists and visitors on to the hill. Rubbish scraps, used bottles, and leftover food were found along the hiking trails, public places, funicular train, and car parks.

This engagement program was made possible through the collaboration from Penang Hill Corporation that provided the venue and sharing their knowledge and data about the biosphere reserve.
