Sustainable Malaysia Association’s stakeholder engagement session with the local community at Permatang Damar Laut

Sustainable Malaysia Association (SMA) in collaboration with Pusat Perkhidmatan Setempat Nelayan (PPSN) has conducted an engagement session with the local community at Permatang Damar Laut on 3 September 2022.

The purpose of the session is to listen to feedback from stakeholders about the current and future development around the area.

A total of 27 stakeholders comprised of the local community, fishermen, and youths.

The participants were introduced by SRS Consortium’s Head of Strategic Communications & Stakeholder Management, Ms Ann Tan about the duties and roles of PPSN. The function of PPSN is to improve the quality of life of people and protect the welfare of the local community, particularly the south of Penang Island.

One of the discussion points during the session was about the proposed Penang South Islands (PSI) project. The community, especially the local fishermen, residents and youths supported the PSI project. It was understood that this initiative will create job opportunities, bring benefits to the community, and be the catalyst for the further economic development of the northern region in Malaysia.

The PSI is also a sustainable development project with a comprehensive environmental mitigation effort. Besides releasing fish fry, the project has also expanded the state’s mangrove forest by planting thousands of mangrove saplings to create new marine nursery ecosystem.

We would like to extend our gratitude to PPSN for partnering, hosting us, and sharing views and knowledge with the stakeholders. Together we can make a difference in our community.
